AS/A level Further Mathematics professional development

The AMSP provides a wide range of professional development for teachers of AS/A level Further Mathematics, offered in flexible formats to suit your needs and availability. These opportunities are often free and, in some cases, additional subsidies are available to enable more teachers to participate.

The range includes online and one-day face-to-face courses, and sustained courses comprising a series of study days and online support delivered over an extended period.

Sustained courses

Course length 6 months

Discrete maths features in all AS/A level Further Mathematics specifications, albeit under different titles:

  • Discrete Mathematics - AQA and OCR A
  • Decision Mathematics - Edexcel
  • Modelling with Algorithms - OCR B (MEI)

Teaching Discrete Mathematics 1 (TD1) is a sustained professional development course for teachers wishing to build their confidence in teaching this content, and covers the discrete maths material common to all AS level Further Mathematics specifications.

TD1 features:

  • eight live online tutorials
  • two study days
  • access to online teaching and learning resources
  • email support from tutors and access to an online group forum

Towards the end of the course a short assignment is issued, for which support and guidance are provided. Course certificates will be available for those participants completing the assignment.

After TD1, participants have the opportunity to continue to TD2, which will further expand understanding of teaching discrete maths content.

Teaching Discrete Mathematics 2 (TD2) is a sustained professional development course for teachers wishing to build their confidence in teaching discrete/decision mathematics. TD2 builds upon the topics studied in TD1 to cover the additional subject content required for A level Further Mathematics.

TD2 features:

  • seven live online tutorials
  • two study days
  • access to online teaching and learning resources
  • email support from tutors and access to an online group forum

Towards the end of the course a short assignment is issued, for which support and guidance are provided. Course certificates will be available for those participants completing the assignment.

Teaching Further Mathematics 1 (TFM1) is a sustained professional development course for teachers wishing to develop their own subject knowledge and classroom practice in teaching A level Further Mathematics. It covers at least the pure material common to all AS level Further Mathematics specifications.

TFM1 features:

  • 10 live online tutorials
  • two study days
  • textbooks to support your studies
  • access to online teaching and learning resources
  • email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Participants will have the option to certificate by submitting an assignment at the end of the course.

Following completion of this course, participants will be eligible to study TFM2, which includes the remaing pure content common to all A level Further Mathematics specifications.

Teaching Further Mathematics 2 (TFM2) is a sustained professional development course for teachers wishing to develop their own subject knowledge and classroom practice in teaching A level Further Mathematics. It covers the pure material common to all A level Further Mathematics specifications.

TFM2 features:
• 10 live online tutorials
• two study days
• textbooks to support your studies
• access to online teaching and learning resources
• email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Participants will have the option to certificate by submitting an assignment at the end of the course.

TFM2 is the second unit of the TFM course. In order to enrol on the TFM2 unit, participants must have already completed the first unit, TFM1.

Teaching Mechanics 2 (TM2) is a sustained professional development course for teachers wishing to build their confidence in teaching mechanics. TM2 covers the mechanics content from all major specifications for AS/A level Further Mathematics.

TM2 features:

  • access to online teaching and learning resources
  • email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Towards the end of the course a short assignment is issued, for which support and guidance are provided. Course certificates will be available for those participants completing the assignment.

In order to enrol on the TM2 course, participants should have a reasonable understanding of the mechanics content of AS/A level Mathematics, ideally through having completed TM1 though this is not compulsory.

Teaching Statistics 2 (TS2) is a sustained professional development course for teachers wishing to further build their confidence in teaching statistics. TS2 covers most of the statistics content from all major specifications for AS/A level Further Mathematics.

  • a textbook to support your studies
  • access to online teaching and learning resources
  • email support from a tutor and access to an online group forum

Towards the end of the course a short assignment is issued, for which support and guidance are provided. Course certificates will be available for those participants completing the assignment.

In order to enrol on the TS2 course, participants should have a reasonable understanding of the statistics content of AS/A level Mathematics, ideally through having completed TS1 though this is not compulsory.

Face-to-face courses

Course length 1 day

Problem solving is one of the overarching themes of the A level specifications. Students need to be able to analyse a problem, break it down into its constituent parts and select te appropriate mathematics to solve it. This course is designed to help teachers develop key problem solving skills in their students. The course starts with ideas for developing general mathematical problem solving skills and shows how students who wish push themselves can develop those skills so that they have the opportunity to apply for universities where an admissions test is required or a university where a good score in an admissions test can lead to a lower offer.

Next Steps is an event for Heads of Sixth Form and Mathematics Teachers about supporting students with the transition to undergraduate study and the mathematical expectations of university admissions tests.

What are the mathematical expectations of universities for students starting their courses? Mathematical skills are important for many undergraduate degree schemes. This course will explain what indications of mathematical ability universities are looking for when they receive a UCAS application. It will also give up to date information about admissions tests for university entrance. The number of these has risen in the past few years. Some are compulsory, some simply reduce entrance requirements. There are 11 admissions tests that have mathematical content and these are for a variety of subjects. This course will explain what support students will need in school and where else they can access support.

Live Online Professional Development (LOPD) courses form a programme of innovative online courses, designed to enable teachers to develop their teaching with confidence in a convenient, stress-free way.

LOPD courses are delivered using a browser-based online classroom that allows participants to collaborate online in real time. The courses aim both to cover subject content common to all current specifications and to facilitate the exchange of teaching ideas. Rather than attending a one or two day course away from school or college, participants will use the internet to meet weekly online.

This course covers topics which are common to AQA and OCR Discrete Maths, Edexcel Decision Maths and MEI Modelling with Algorithms. Further topics to complete the content for each specification will be available soon via the On Demand Professional Development (ODPD) programme.

This course comprises seven online sessions with an experienced tutor, each between 60 and 90 minutes in length and delivered in a small group of teachers allowing opportunities for interaction and discussion.

On Demand Professional Development

This On Demand Professional Development course is designed to support teachers with using GeoGebra across a wide range of contexts in the Mathematics classroom. The methods are particularly applicable in the A level Maths classroom, but are designed for a toolbox of methods which can be used to illuminate a much wider range of maths.

The course comprises 4 "pods", each covering an element of GeoGebra's functionality. In each pod, teachers will see short videos or walkthroughs guiding them through the methods, using examples from A level Mathematics study, along with practice materials, triggers for reflection and suggestions for further study. Teachers will be encouraged to interact and collaborate with others studying the same material via the online forums. An expert tutor will be monitoring the forums and will respond to queries.

The course offers total flexibility regarding when teachers can access the materials, day or night, over a period of up to one year. Teachers will be able to track their progress within the course and to see when they have completed a section or the full pod.

This is an On Demand Professional Development course designed to support teachers who will work with students taking one of these fourth term university entrance tests. It will also be of interest to any teacher wishing to extend their problem solving skills or enrich their teaching of A level Mathematics or Further Mathematics.

The course comprises 11 "pods", each covering either a specific method which features in these tests or an overarching concept.

In each pod, teachers will see short videos guiding them through the ideas of the topic along with practice materials, triggers for reflection and suggestions for further study. Teachers will be encouraged to interact and collaborate with others studying the same material via the online forums. An expert tutor will be monitoring the forums and will respond to queries.

The course offers total flexibility regarding when teachers can access the materials, day or night, over a period of up to one year. Teachers will be able to track their progress within the course and to see when they have completed a section, a pod or a full course.
