The AMSP can help you promote the level 3 maths qualifications that your school offers to students and to help inform parents of the choices available to young people.

Below you will find a range of resources dedicated to the question Why Maths?

On this page, you can access:

Why study maths? presentationNew!

Why study maths? is a presentation for students and parents/carers, which lasts approximately 30 minutes, about the importance of studying maths post-GCSE. It outlines the options available and provides compelling reasons for choosing to take an advanced maths qualification.

The presentation is very comprehensive, and also comes with supporting teacher notes. It’s fully editable, in fact you’re encouraged to edit the presentation so that it suits the needs of your school.

WHY MATHS Video collectionNew!

In this collection you will find a set of seven short videos, all under four minutes, featuring over 30 talented young people discussing their experiences of studying Post 16 maths.

These videos are specifically designed to showcase the relevance and practical applications of maths, and to inspire students in Years 9-11 to pursue further study beyond GCSE. They’re perfect to play during class or assembly.

We have also created an eighth video which is a compilation of the seven short videos with additional information on Post 16 maths qualifications. You may find this useful to play at events like Open Evenings.

An Introduction to Core Maths presentation

This presentation is intended to be used by teachers to inform their Key Stage 4 students about the Level 3 Core Maths course.

As well as giving key information about Core Maths, the presentation also includes a section on why it’s a useful course to study and has several activities suitable for students in Year 10 and Year 11 that give a flavour of what studying Core Maths will be like. There are comprehensive teacher notes available as well. It’s fully editable, in fact you’re encouraged to edit the presentation so that it suits the needs of your school.

Display materials and literature

We’ve published a range of literature to support students in choosing which post-16 maths will be the best for them. You can view and download our range of leaflets, postcards and posters on the AMSP website.

If you’re looking for display material for your classroom or subject stand at an open evening, we’ve recently produced some career profiles. They show the usefulness of maths and the many careers that studying maths can lead to, which is one reason why many students choose to continue with maths after GCSE.

You can print off and display the career profiles below. Each one has a QR code which links to a video from our Where maths meets… the world of work! collection. There are four career examples for each of the level 3 maths qualifications – Core Maths, A level Mathematics, and A level Further Mathematics.

Taster lessons

We’ve created six online taster lessons – two each for Core Maths, A level Mathematics, and A level Further Mathematics. The lessons are designed for students to work through independently and give a flavour of what it is like to study each of these qualifications. Each lesson consists of an introductory video followed by an interactive activity for the student to work through at their own pace.

If you would like to direct the use of the resources with your students then you can find editable versions for teacher use in this Level 3 Maths Taster sessions collection on Desmos.
