Overview

Our acclaimed four-day summer school is for teachers who have studied some mathematics beyond A level standard but have little or no experience of teaching A level Mathematics.

Our New to Teaching A level Mathematics will be held in Birmingham for the first time this year. The course is designed to build confidence, strengthen pedagogical knowledge, and develop effective, engaging A level teaching practice.

During the four days, you’ll participate in over 10 expert-led sessions covering a range of topics from pure mathematics to mechanics and statistics. You will explore diverse teaching strategies—questioning, modelling, multiple representations, and integrating technology—while collaborating with peers and gaining approaches for immediate classroom use.

By the end of the summer school, you will have planned and delivered a team-taught, twenty-minute lesson, giving you the opportunity to put new ideas into practice. You will leave with increased confidence and a clearer understanding of how key A level concepts connect across the curriculum.

What you will learn

Develop the skills, strategies, and confidence to teach A level Mathematics with clarity, coherence, and genuine student engagement.

Strengthen your Pedagogical Practice

Build Confidence Through Hands On Experience

Apply your learning by collaboratively planning and delivering a team-taught, twenty-minute lesson after engaging in sessions throughout the four days.

Connect Curriculum Concepts

Develop your understanding of how key concepts that underpin A level maths are linked together across the subject, to create lessons that support stronger student outcomes.

All sessions were incredibly valuable and extremely well organised. I now feel much more confident in teaching A level, but will also take away strategies that will have a huge impact on my teaching throughout the school. It was excellent. I especially liked the focus on pedagogy rather than subject knowledge.
