Overview

A free and engaging one-day professional development conference designed for teachers either offering, or thinking about offering, Core Maths. The day will focus on approaches for teaching and learning Core Maths.

Delegates will get ample opportunity to gather resources and ideas and share experiences with teachers from other schools and colleges.

Aims

  • Develop pedagogical approaches for teaching Core Maths effectively.
  • Discover engaging Core Maths activities.
    • Network and share ideas with fellow teachers of Core Maths.

    Who will benefit from attending?

These conferences are suitable for any teacher who is currently teaching Core Maths or who expects to do so in the near future.

Last year, the content of our Core Maths Conferences focused on Estimation and Critical Analysis. For this series, we are focusing on data. For full details, please see the agenda in the ‘Study Schedule’ below. If this content does not meet your requirements, please explore our extensive Core Maths PD offer or request bespoke support from one of our Core Maths Specialist Leads.

If you are yet to teach or offer Core Maths, you may find it useful to attend one of our Getting Started with Core Maths webinars or explore the information provided in this collection.

    Study schedule

    Study Schedule:

    Time Content
    9:15-9:45 Registration
There will be tea/coffee and pastries provided.
9:45-11:10 Developing Curiosity with Andrew Birch and Jude Mortimer
How do you make a Core Maths lesson an immersive, fun and experimental session where students can explore, follow their own questions and discover how to let the data reveal its answers? In this session, we will take you on a journey through a dataset discussing how to engage students, build curiosity, encourage questioning, select appropriate mathematical skills and make the connections between the dataset and the big picture.
    11:10-11:30 Networking and refreshments
There will be tea/coffee and biscuits provided.
11:30-12:45 Tools for exploring data with Tom Rainbow
All Core Maths specifications have an expectation that students will develop their ability to use data to solve problems. But when faced with the evidence, are your Core Mathematicians able to make sense of it efficiently and effectively?  In this session we will be considering how you can empower your students to process data whilst reducing much of the ‘number crunching’ that has always been synonymous with statistical problem solving.
    12:45-13:30 Lunch
    There will be lunch provided.
13:30-14:45 Inspiring potential Core Maths students with Cat van Saarloos
Recruitment can be one of the biggest challenges when establishing Core Maths. In this session you will get hands on with some popular activities to use with potential Core Maths students and leave with ideas on how to get other subject areas to raise awareness of the benefits of the course.
**For this session, we would also like you to share activities your students have enjoyed. Full details will be provided in the joining instructions.**
    14:45-15:00 Evaluation and close
