About Leyton Sixth Form College

Leyton Sixth Form College is a diverse, inclusive and ambitious college in East London. It has about 2000 students studying full time at level 3, with around 60% of students taking A levels and 40% on vocational programmes such as BTEC. We also offer BTEC and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses at Level 1 and 2 to enable students to access further learning through progression at the college. Around 600 students go on to university each year from both A level and vocational courses, with nearly 100 students gaining places at Russell Group universities last year.

What they’re doing in relation to Core Maths

The Leyton Sixth Form College maths department offers Core Maths, A level and AS level in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and GCSE Mathematics resit, ensuring the right course is available for any student studying post-16 maths. Since October 2018, the college has been a member of the Centres for Excellence in Maths (CfEM), which is a five-year national improvement programme funded by the Department for Education aimed at delivering sustained improvements in maths outcomes for 16-19-year-olds, up to Level 2, in post-16 settings.

Leyton Sixth Form College has offered a Core Maths programme since the initial pilot. Core Maths is offered as an enrichment pathway. Other enrichment pathway subjects include the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Duke of Edinburgh Award, Photography Arts Award, and language courses. Our Core Maths cohort is normally around 50-70 students studying the AQA specification with the Statistical Techniques (2A) option. In September 2022, we’ll additionally offer the Graphical Techniques (2C) option to support our vocational Engineering students. The course is taught in one year and teaching time is the same as our A level courses. Over half of the department staff are experienced Core Maths teachers, some with experience as AQA Core Maths examiners, and we regularly participate in our local Maths Hub and the AMSP’s Core Maths Specification Network meetings.
