At last, we’re allowed to visit schools to work with students on exciting maths beyond the curriculum.

St Clere’s School in Stanford-le-Hope welcomed us in for a day to do some activities with some of their Year 10 students to get them thinking about possible careers and their A level choices. This was particularly exciting as they’re welcoming their first cohort of Year 12 students into their school in September when they open their new sixth form.

The highlights were the Dragon Quiz and the plenary talk from Alex Partner from the University of Essex. Alex presented a series of surprising results and the students were able to work together in groups to disprove their own misconceptions using their maths skills and general knowledge. The students also took part in a Fermi Estimation Quiz and worked in groups to estimate ‘How far will you walk in a lifetime?’

It was a really fun day and it was great to spend time with students who were enjoying and engaging in exciting maths. Why not try the Fermi Estimation Quiz with your students?
