Richard Stakes, AC for Shropshire, Staffordshire, Telford and Wrekin

Various events have been happening across the West Midlands to support sixth formers with their problem solving skills.

On 6 November, 16 Year 12 students and their teachers from Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and Madeley Academy (Telford) met at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College for a Problem Solving Conference. They were challenged by Ian Slater, an AMSP Associate with many years of experience supporting students to develop their mathematical problem-solving skills.

On 8 November, 22 Year 12 students from Painsley, Cheadle High and Westwood High gathered at Painsley Catholic Sixth Form College for a student and teacher conference, where all enjoyed the challenges set by AMSP Assistant AC Mike Baxter.

Both events were a great success, and it was wonderful to see students enjoying themselves so much while solving maths problems together.

The Keele Problem Solving Course, led by AMSP Associates Ian Slater and Martin Paisley, began on 15 November. This first week of a 12-week course was attended by over 40 students from eight local sixth forms. Students are split into Year 12 and Year 13 groups to work on problems together, learning new ways of thinking and developing their skills.
