The last month or so have seen many schools and colleges take part in the heats of the popular Senior Team Maths Challenge (STMC), sponsored for 2018 by Rolls Royce. Across the south, ten heats have taken place, as student teams went head to head hoping to reach the London final in February 2019.

As always, the questions were challenging, but nevertheless we saw full marks from teams in some rounds. The Cherwell School impressively only lost 3 marks in a single penalty. Several heats saw two or even three teams tie for first place!

If you’re interested in entering a team next year, it’s worth exploring previous STMC materials to see how your students get on with the questions. These old materials make for a great internal competitive event to increase the fun factor and give your students something different to do.

Everyone who took part did really well. We would like to congratulate Aylesbury Grammar School, Bellerbys College, Bexhill College, Brighton College, City of London Freemen’s School, Farnborough Sixth Form College, Hampton School, Pangbourne College, Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, The Cherwell School, Tonbridge School, Wilson’s School and Winchester College, who will be representing the south in the final on 5th February. Good luck!
