Here at the AMSP North West headquarters, we’ve been adapting AMSP resources to provide a series of short enrichment tasks for GCSE Mathematics. Our latest offering is all about quadratic equations, and it finishes with a look at the history of the quadratic equation and its origins.

Did you know that the quadratic equation was fiercely debated in the House of Commons in 2003? It was decided that yes, it was an important piece of the mathematical landscape and, as such, should remain on the curriculum.

The history of the quadratic equation actually stems from 300BC and the Babylonians – it’s a fascinating story, captured in an article by Chris Budd and Chris Sangwin.

You can access the AMSP’s short enrichment tasks by contacting Antony Edkins ([email protected]), the AMSP North West Regional Lead.
