Like much of our work, our regular problem-solving classes for Year 12 and Year 13 have moved online this year. Whilst we are missing the benefits of working with students face-to-face, there are some benefits to going digital – for example the greater reach we have, as students who previously would have struggled to attend for logistical reasons can now access the course.

The classes for Dorset, South Wiltshire, and Frome started in June in preparation for the MAT and TMUA examinations, and these problem-solving classes are planned to continue until May 2021. Students work on university entrance test questions in small breakout rooms supported by experienced tutors, and discuss problem-solving approaches as a whole group. The course has proved so popular that we even had to employ another tutor!

At the time of writing, we have just been informed that STEP 1 will not take place this year, however higher level problem-solving skills are essential for success at university level maths so, if you have students who you believe would benefit from these monthly Saturday morning classes and who would enjoy solving problems with some like-minded peers, you can sign them up to start in November on the AMSP website (Dorset, South Wiltshire, and Frome).

Regular problem-solving classes for the Bath and Bristol areas are due to start this week, and are fully booked at the time of this newsletter.

The Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset classes will be starting on Wednesday 20 January 2021 and will run weekly (except during half term) until Wednesday 31 March 2021. You can sign students up to these classes on the AMSP website.
