Our Core Maths Winter Festival is back for 2023! This event will run as a series of talks by inspirational speakers designed to enthuse, challenge, and enlighten you about maths in the world around us. Although each event expands on key features of the Core Maths qualification, they are relevant for all secondary teachers whose subjects incorporate some mathematical content, such as Biology, Geography and Psychology.

Kicking this year’s event off on 26 January is Junaid Mubeen with ‘A fresh take on modelling and estimation’. Junaid will highlight humans’ innate ability for estimation and will take you through fresh examples of how these skills can be used to handle various real-world phenomena.

On 28 January, our second series talk will be an Introduction to infographics with the authors of ‘An Answer for Everything’ with Rob Orchard and Marcus Webb. Infographics are visual representations of information or data and are an excellent way for students to engage with Core Maths principles in a fun and compelling way.

Our last speaker will be Sue Hough on 1 February, presenting ‘Realistic Maths’. Realistic Maths Education builds deep, long-term mathematical understanding by starting from contexts students can recognise and make sense of in the real world.

All sessions will be held on Zoom, making it accessible within your busy schedule. We hope you will leave inspired and with increased confidence to use the content in your classrooms effectively.

Our Core Maths Winter Festival is free for teachers working in state-funded schools, colleges, and academies in England. Teachers based in other parts of the UK or in independent schools and colleges may apply, but places will only be allocated if there is availability.
