Michael supports teachers and students in the Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Darlington areas of the North East.

As one of the new North East Area Coordinators, I’ll be your first point of call if you’re based in North Tyneside, Newcastle or Darlington. This is an exciting time for the AMSP as we expand to cover all aspects of Level 3 Mathematics – now including Core Maths! – and continue to work with teachers and students at KS4 and KS5 to prepare and encourage them to study maths post-16 and beyond.

I have worked with the AMSP (formerly FMSP) as an associate for a number of years now including running Problem Solving sessions for year 12s and 13s and the local STEP exam preparation courses. I will be continuing to organise and deliver these this coming year. The Problem Solving course got off to a very successful start on Saturday 10th November with 15 very enthusiastic young mathematicians getting together at Gosforth Academy to collaborate on some fun and challenging mathematical problems. Similar sessions will be happening throughout the year in various locations and the STEP course will get underway in January.

I am particularly looking forward to helping to provide support for Core Maths, which we are hoping will take off in a big way over the coming years. This qualification plugs a gap which has been left open for too long, providing students with real-life mathematical skills that will be valued by employers and universities, as well as equipping students to manage their own personal finances. There are professional development opportunities running throughout the year for teachers of Core Maths.

I am also very excited about the planned launch of our Mobile Maths Library, which will allow students to borrow popular maths books to read at home when we visit their schools. We will be relying mostly on donated books for this service so any help building up our stock would be much appreciated!

I look forward to meeting and working with many of you over the next few years. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions about the AMSP and our work.
