On the 2nd May around 100 Year 10 students and their teachers came to the University of Bath for the Maths Is For Everyone event. This day has run for a number of years in both Bath and Bristol, but the format of the event has evolved based on the feedback from students and teachers.

This time the event featured talks from Zoe Griffiths and Ben Sparks, the ever popular Dragon Quiz, a session on maths beyond GCSE and careers, and time for Q&A with students and staff from the university. There were some interesting connections between Zoe’s talk on the hidden maths beyond technology and Ben’s on magical maths – with Zoe blindfolding herself to perform a magic trick!

The varied programme of the day was designed to be both entertaining and informative, and every session appeared as either the favourite or most useful somewhere in the feedback. One student comment stuck in my mind – “I really enjoyed the day, and I’m thinking about taking Further Maths now. I think people who don’t like maths should still come because it might change their minds”.

Keep a look out on the AMSP events page for similar events coming up.
