The Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) is here to help you to help your students realise their potential through studying maths beyond GCSE. One way of encouraging your students to continue with maths to level 3 and beyond is by showing them how important mathematical skills are to a wide variety of future careers.

Linking maths and careers is something that we know schools and teachers are working hard to do. We also know that it can be time-consuming to find or create resources that are authentic and inspiring, as well as finding time to fit them into the curriculum.

Below are some suggestions that we’ll hope you’ll find are ‘quick wins’:

We’ve collated a selection of our resources that demonstrate how maths is key to many careers. You can access them in the ‘Resources – What we have to help’ section on our ‘Encouraging girls’ participation in advanced maths’ webpage and, if you ‘Dig deeper’ in the same section, you’ll discover resources from other providers that we highly recommend.

Celebrating the role that maths has to play as part of a nationally-themed awareness campaign is a great way to engage your students.

This spring term, there are three weeks that are likely to feature on your school calendar:

To coincide with these nationally recognised weeks, we’re running two live online Which Career? – Meet people working in different roles panel events for you and students to join in with:

  • The first will take place on Friday 11 February 2022 from 11:00-11:45am (within National Apprenticeship Week). Students will hear from current and recent apprentices about how the skills they developed from studying maths beyond GCSE help within their chosen career, as well as the benefits of following an apprenticeship route. In the Q&A section, your students can ask the panellists about why they made that decision and what it’s actually like to be at work, and gain some valuable advice from relatable role models.
  • The second will take place on Friday 11 March 2022 from 2:00-2:45pm (within National Careers Week and British Science Week). Students will hear from early career professionals across very different jobs about how they got into their roles, what it’s actually like to be at work, and how the maths skills they’ve developed help them day-to-day. The panellists will offer plenty of advice and encouragement and your students can ask them (almost) anything in the Q&A section!

You can find out more about both events and sign up for both events on our website. You could even pass the information to your Careers Lead and ask them to sign your students up!

If you have any questions about the events or resources mentioned above, or if you’d like more information about linking maths and careers in the classroom, please email [email protected].
