Alice Fitzgerald, AC for Stoke-on-Trent

We’ve recently hosted two twilight CPD events for new teachers of mechanics. Introduction to Mechanics at A level for Beginners was held on 15 November and 6 December 2018.

City of Stoke on Trent sixth form college hosted this AMSP CDP course for A-level teachers. The sessions were led with great enthusiasm and expertise by Toby Rome, a national coordinator for the AMSP Central team, who said “I have always loved mechanics, as it is full of the sort of ‘penny drop’ moments that make teaching such a wonderful job”.

Teachers from Stoke, Staffordshire and beyond were helped to develop their subject knowledge, and explore and discuss teaching ideas and resources which deepen students’ understanding of these concepts. The course covered the key topics of motion and force which underpin the mechanics content of the new maths AS/A Level. Teachers watched and took part in several practical demonstrations of the concepts that were being explored and unpicked common misconceptions.

The course was extremely well received with delegates making comments such as “(I) want to learn more. I enjoy mechanics now!” and “one of the best courses I have been on”. Many thanks to Toby for such an enjoyable and thought provoking course.
