Starting in March and continuing across the spring and summer terms, we’re running two online enrichment events for Year 10 students, both of which will be repeated at different times to allow you to choose the event which best fits your timetable.

The events are designed to engage your Year 10 students while developing an area of GCSE Mathematics beyond the curriculum and will also inform them about their options for studying maths after GCSE. Both events will develop students’ reasoning, problem solving and communication skills, which are all vital for success at GCSE, and will provide a context for their classwork. Any maths used in the sessions will be based on that expected at Higher Tier GCSE.

  • Are you Psychic? will draw on students’ knowledge of probability to make decisions based on statistics and will offer suggestions for next steps.
  • Making a Million! will use students’ knowledge of percentages to work out the best investment strategies.

Students will be set a task to work on during part of the session and resources and guidance for this task will be emailed to teachers before the event. It will be helpful to us if students could submit their results before the plenary, either via the teacher’s computer or via students’ computers, smart phones or tablets.

We envisage that these events will be streamed into a classroom where the session will be facilitated by the teacher, but the link can also be shared with students who are studying at home so that they can join remotely. There will be opportunities for interaction but, at no point in the session, will students be asked to share personal information. Students will be able to engage with the session presenters whether they are accessing the session from a classroom or via remote learning at home.

You can book a place for your class at Are you Psychic? and Making a Million! on the AMSP website. These sessions are free to attend for state-funded schools and colleges.
