Applications are now open for our Problem Solving Matters course for students, which aims to develop the problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking required for university admissions tests.

This course is designed for Year 12 students from state-funded schools, academies and colleges who are interested in applying for any university course that requires or accepts the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) or the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) admissions tests. Participants will receive support in preparing for the MAT and the TMUA and will become familiar with mathematical problems at the difficulty level of the tests. The course would also benefit students who wish to improve their mathematical problem-solving skills in preparation for a university course, and provides a good base for preparing for the STEP examinations.

Problem Solving Matters consists of three study days, three summer assignments and four online follow-up sessions. The three study days will focus on problem-solving skills within different topics, such as:

  • curve sketching and coordinate geometry
  • calculus, surds, indices and logarithms
  • trigonometry and either combinatorics or sequences and functions.

Due to Coronavirus, we will be delivering the first two study days online, rather than face-to-face as they were previously. Students will be able to access videos, questions, hints and online support. We are monitoring the situation and will decide whether the third study day will also be delivered online nearer to the time.

The fee for this course is £60. A limited number of free places are available if you will have trouble meeting the cost of the course. Please indicate this on the application form.

Problem Solving Matters starts in June and will run until September. You can find out more information and apply for the course on the AMSP website.
