Kent and Medway Summer Maths Conference - Raising Confidence with Reasoning in the GCSE Classroom

Overview

The Kent and Medway Maths Conference is an annual event where the AMSP and the Kent and Medway Maths Hub come together to provide outstanding professional development opportunities for teachers of maths in Kent and Medway. The conference is taking place online this year and is running as a series of twilight workshops (16.15 to 17.45) from Monday 11th July 2022 until Thursday 14th July 2022. 

There is evidence to suggest that while problem solving and fluency is improving at GCSE, students still find reasoning difficult. This twilight course focuses on the development of reasoning from KS2 through to GCSE. It provides strategies and ideas for teachers to use immediately in their classrooms to develop the skills of all of their students. There will be opportunities to consider how these concepts and resources could be embedded in professional practice and contribute towards the ambition and intent of the department's curriculum.

• To share ideas and strategies for developing reasoning within your mathematics curriculum for all of your students
• To provide support in developing your professional practice and that of departmental colleagues
• To consider how your department can develop your curriculum in line with the 2019 Ofsted Framework

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers who wish to improve their teaching of GCSE maths and/or the skills of their students.

Content

Recent changes to the GCSE have given greater prominence to reasoning in secondary education.

Raising Confidence with Reasoning provides strategies and resources for teachers to use in the classroom with GCSE maths students, with the objective of increasing the number of students that decide to choose maths beyond GCSE.

Materials and Equipment

Teachers will need access to reliable broadband and a microphone to be able to take an active part in the workshops.

Other Information

This course is a shorter version of the full day Raising Confidence with Reasoning in the GCSE CLassroom course. You, or someone in your department, may wish to consider attending the full day version and the other courses in the Raising Confidence suite. 

Eligibility

Teachers working in schools in Kent and Medway will be given priority when applying to take part in this event. Teachers from other areas of the country may be allocated places at the workshops if additional capacity is available.

Cost

All workshops in the Kent and Medway Conference 2022 are provided free of charge.
