Andy Field's Adventure in Statistics
Overview
Our Winter Core Maths Festival is comprised of six talks by seven inspirational speakers. We hope that these will enthuse, challenge and enlighten you and offer a springboard to the creation of fantastic contextualised maths lessons.
Who will benefit from attending?
These sessions are designed to appeal to all maths teachers, regardless of how much experience of Core Maths you have had, if any.
We strongly believe that greater collaboration across departments can be hugely beneficial for students and encourage you to invite your science and social science colleagues to this talk.
Presenter

Professor Andy Field
Award-winning author of Discovering Statistics
Content
“Psychology and mathematics are two disciplines that are intimately linked. Without mathematics, psychology is toothless” (The British Psychological Society)
One of the many benefits of studying L3 Core Maths is that it can really deepen the understanding of statistical components of A level Psychology. We are delighted that best-selling author and Professor of Quantitative Methods, Andy Field is speaking at this year’s festival. His ability to make statistics accessible and fun has been recognized with many local and national teaching awards.
Andy is author of the bestselling textbook ‘Discovering Statistics' for which he won the British Psychological Society book award in 2007 and most recently, he published ‘An Adventure In Statistics: The Reality Enigma’, which aims to teach statistics through a fictional story.
During his talk, he will discuss the importance of statistical literacy as a transferable skill, and the difficulties that Psychology students without maths backgrounds face during their degrees. You will also leave with some ideas about how to engage Psychology students in learning to think statistically.
Materials and Equipment
During the session, there will be opportunities to ask questions via the chat function on the platform but microphones and webcams are not necessary.
