Nira Chamberlain and The Monte Carlo Simulation
Overview
Our Winter Core Maths Festival is comprised of six inspirational talks by seven inspirational speakers. We hope that these will enthuse, challenge and enlighten you and offer a springboard to the creation of fantastic contextualised maths lessons.
Who will benefit from attending?
These sessions are designed to appeal to all maths teachers, regardless of how much experience of Core Maths you have had, if any.
We strongly believe that greater collaboration across departments can be hugely beneficial for students and encourage you to invite your science and social science colleagues to this talk.
Presenter

Dr Nira Chamberlain
President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications
Content
The first talk in our Saturday double-bill is the incredible, Dr Nira Chamberlain. Nira is President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and has over 25 years experience writing mathematical models and simulation algorithms that solve complex industrial problems. All students will learn how to use mathematics to predict the future, but for a lot of them this will be limited to the outcome of coins being flipped or playing cards being selected. Yet, these same students will also be using the results of complex probability analyses regularly - from weather forecasts to video games and artificial intelligence to fantasy football leagues - and all these applications use Monte Carlo simulation methods to determine the best predictions.
In this eye-opening session, Nira will guide you through the fascinating mathematics of the Monte Carlo method and explain why he is fascinated by this much used yet little-know branch of probability theory.
Materials and Equipment
During the session, there will be opportunities to ask questions via the chat function on the platform but microphones and webcams are not necessary.
