Preparing students to study Mathematics at University- what every Maths teacher needs to know about University Admissions Tests
University admissions tests used to be seen as just for 'high-fliers'. However with the changes to the tests, and to the A Level syllabus the problem solving skills needed to do well in these tests is more widely relevant. All students aiming for high grades will benefit from exploring the materials used for these exams, and exposing students to these types of problems early on can be used to raise students' aspitarions and develop their confidence.
In this meeting we will start with a whistle-stop tour of the university admissions tests for mathematics, then we will look at a selection of problems from each type of test, going on to look at ways of using some of the admissions test materials in lessons. There will be the opportunity to discuss the materials and further useful links and opportunities will be explored.
The workshop will be delivered by Sally White who is the AMSP Regional Lead for Yorkshire and the Humber.
- To gain a clearer understanding of the role and scope of university admissions tests.
- To explore the use of admissions test material to stretch and develop students' problem solving skills.
Who will benefit from attending?
All teachers of A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
