Teaching standard deviation in A Level Biology

Overview

This event is being run in partnership with the Association for Science Education, as part of the ‘Mathematics for Biology Teachers’ project (MfBT), with support from the Department for Education.

In this session we will look at ways to teach averages and standard deviation to students that support good understanding and allow students to be able to apply their knowledge in a range of biological contexts. We will demonstrate a variety of approaches for biology teachers to use when introducing summary statistics to their students and we will show how studying Core Maths can suport this topic in A level Biology.

During the session we will use a range of technologies to help support the teaching and learning of central tendency and variance in biology.

Aims

  • To provide ideas and resources to support the teaching of central tendency and variance in biology and show how Core Maths would support this
  • To demonstrate ways in which these key statistical concepts can be introduced to A level biology students using a variety of freely available technology

Who will benefit from attending?

This session is aimed at non-maths teachers, in particular teachers of biology, although all teachers of science are welcome.

If you are a maths teacher please look here to see our suite of free Core Maths teacher support including our Core Maths Common Topics course as well as our on demand Core Maths top ups professional development.

If you would like to know more about our work with other subjects please look at our dedicated page.

Materials and Equipment

Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so the use of microphones and webcams is encouraged but not essential.

Other Information

Please note that booking for this event will close at 4pm on Monday 26th April to give us time to process applications.

Teachers who sign up will be emailed in the days prior to the session and again on the day of the session with a link to the online meeting room.

This teacher CPD workshop, and others to follow, are part of the ASE and AMSP 'Mathematics for Biology Teachers' project (MfBT), supported by the Department for Education. The project aims to develop the capabilities and confidence of biology teachers in their use of mathematics within the post 16 context, promote the value of studying level 3 mathematics to post 16 biology students, promote the provision of Core Maths by schools and colleges with uptake by a wider group of their post 16 students, and highlight the 'maths rich' nature of biology in different educational phases and careers. For more information about this project, and to get involved, contact [email protected]

Cost

The sessions are free of charge to all teachers from UK state-funded schools and colleges. Teachers from independent schools can participate, subject to the availiability of places.
