Core Maths Summer Festival - Truth or Lies? The Empowering Nature of Mathematics

When George Bernard Shaw wrote ‘beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance’, it is unlikely he could have foreseen its relevance in the twenty-first century. With so many information channels available to them, people today face an ever more common dilemma – who can I trust?

Fortunately, the combination of readily available data and mathematics means that our young people can learn to find their way through the swathes of misinformation and spin that they are frequently subjected to.

This session will show how the processing, interpretation and evaluation of data can be used to sort truth from lies. We will be exploring some of the statistical and spreadsheet features of Geogebra and how these can enhance your lessons. No prior knowledge of this program is expected.

Tom Rainbow works on the AMSP supporting schools and colleges deliver Level 3 Core Maths. He loves all aspects of mathematics but has a particular interest in exploring ways in which mathematics can provide young people with a set of tools with which to make sense of the world they live in.

Who will benefit from attending?

These sessions are designed to appeal to all maths teachers, regardless of how much experience of Core Maths you have had, if any. These sessions are also likely to appeal to teachers of other subjects that incorporate some mathematical content, such as Biology, Geography and Social Science.

Materials and Equipment

The sessions take place on Zoom.

We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and strongly encourage you to put your webcam on for some or all of the session. Please also come prepared to discuss and reflect for short periods in breakout rooms as this will be a feature of most of the sessions.

All teachers are eligible to apply for a place at the festival. If the festival becomes over-subscribed, teachers from state-funded schools and colleges are given priority; this may mean that we may be unable to provide places to non-state-sector applicants.

The sessions are free of charge to all teachers in England.
