Moving on With Maths

East Midlands

This online event will give A Level mathematicians an insight into problem solving as well as looking at the admissions procedures for universities and the relevant admissions tests. There will be short talks from the mathematics departments at both The University of Nottingham and The University of Lincoln and candidates will have an opportunity to ask questions about studying mathematics and other STEM subjects at higher level.

  • To provide information about applying to study STEM subjects at university, including grade expectations and relevant admissions tests
  • To look at different approaches when answering both closed and more open-ended questions
  • To discover what is involved in studying Mathematics at university
  • To provide students with an opportunity to deepen their mathematical understanding and so increase their confidence when tackling more challenging questions

Who will benefit from attending?

Students studying A Level mathematics and their teachers will benefit from attending this event. It will be interactive through problem solving questions via Desmos which can be tackled by all participants. The event will be of particular interest to those students wishing to take their mathematical studies further than A Level.

Session 1: Applying for a Degree in Maths

What to expect with the admissions process, the grades you will need, who asks for which admissions tests and interviews

Session 2: Lets do some Maths

Students and their teachers will have the opportunity to tackle some problem based questions followed by discussion on different approaches.

Session 3: Studying Maths at University

Professor Matthew Hubbard from The School of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Nottingham and Dr Martin Greenall from The School of Mathematics and Physics at The University of Lincoln will speak to us about studying Mathematics at university. There will also be a question and answer session.

Session 4: A look at some Admissions Tests Questions

There will be a chance to see some past admissions tests questions and all participants will be able to try them for themselves via Desmos.

The event will be available for all schools and colleges. Priority will be given to schools in the East Midlands region.
