Which Career? - How maths is used in different roles
These enrichment events are designed to inform your Year 10 - 11 students about how maths is used in different careers and the importance of continuing to study maths after GCSE.
Attending the events will help both teachers and students link maths curriculum learning to careers, thus fulfilling Gatsby Benchmark 4.
Students will have the opportunity to choose the careers that the presenters will talk about, with a maths question relevant to that career!
The event will be repeated at a different time to allow you to choose the event which best fits your timetable. It is designed so that the event can either be streamed into a classroom where interaction is managed by the teacher or the link to the event can be sent by the teacher to their students so that they can participate in the event if they are studying at home.
There will be opportunities for interaction during the session.
Who will benefit from attending?
The event is aimed at those Year 9 - 11 students who would benefit from studying level 3 mathematics after GCSE, though you may want to consider other students within your school or college.
'Which Career? - How maths is used in different roles' will allow your students to choose which careers will be discussed by the presenters, which is hoped will make the session even more relevant to your students! The presenters will set a question for students to work on which relates to the most popular choice of career, before working through possible solutions and explaining how this question arises within the career. As the careers will be chosen by the students, there may be different careers discussed in each event.
In addition to this event, we are running an event called 'Which Career? - Meet people working in different roles'.
Materials and Equipment
Students will be asked to do some maths relevant to GCSE so paper, pen and calculators will be useful.
Your school will be sent a link to the event for which you register. This link may be shared with other teachers within your school and with any students who are unable to attend school.
While it is hoped that your students can be supported by mathematics teachers, we have developed resources to support non-specialists if they are facilitating the event. Additionally, we are aware that you may have students who are not in school and the event has been designed to support these students; they will be able to participate fully in the interactive aspects.
The event will be streamed live as a Zoom webinar.
There will be the opportunity for your students to choose the careers that are discussed - your students will need access to a computer or smart phone to do this (this could be the teacher's computer in a classroom or a set of tablets with internet access). At no point in the session will a student be asked to provide personal information.
All state schools are encouraged to attend.
Students who are unable to attend school can be sent the link for the event by their teacher so that they can join remotely.
