A free enrichment event aimed at Year 8 students to enthuse and inspire them about their study of mathematics

Aims

  • Students will have the chance to explore how maths can be used in different situations
  • Student will have the opportunity to develop their mathematical communication skills

Who will benefit from attending?

Year 8 students who are on target to achieve a grade 4 in their GCSEs and would benefit from seeing how mathematics can be used outside the classroom environment.

Content

Magic: In this hands-on and interactive workshop, magic tricks which have mathematical or scientific content will be demonstrated. They are designed to make students say WOW !!! Then ask HOW? Students will be provided with materials so that they can try the tricks for themselves. This talk is designed to illustrate the fun in studying STEM subjects, and will be of interest to all naturally curious students.

Dragons: A Dragon Quiz is a team contest, where teams compete to answer as many questions as possible in the time allowed. Answering questions correctly gives extra pieces of the dragon, and the team with the longest dragon wins.

Other Information

 An adult from each school must accompany and be responsible for students throughout the event. Light refreshments will be provided, but students may want to bring water. Parking is limited at the school however it is also possible to park on local roads. 

Eligibility

Due to DfE funding, applications from independent schools are welcome, but places will be places will be offered to students from state schools initially.
