The Art of Teaching Problem Solving, Modelling & Proof in A Level Mathematics

Bradford

Overview

This one day course for teachers of AS and A level Mathematics, provides an opportunity to consider how the new 'overarching themes' of proof, problem solving and modelling can be delivered together with aspects of the curriculum content from pure mathematics.

Although these themes have always been a part of A level Mathematics, they now account for 50% of the marks in the new assessment objectives. Examiners' reports on the new AS and A level Mathematics from summer 2019, from all specifications, agree that the most significant challenge was the new assessment objectives, which led to changes in the demands placed upon students.

As part of the day we will also focus on the University Admissions Tests, and how these can be used to enhance the Problem Solving aspects of lessons for all students, particularly those aiming at A* to B grades.

Aims

  • To consider how the overarching themes of proof problem solving and modelling can be addressed within the curriculum content.
  • To understand the scope of University Admission Tests and how these can be used to support high grades.

Who will benefit from attending?

All teachers of A level Mathematics who would like to develop their teaching to address the new assessment objectives in A level Mathematics, and support students to achieve high grades.
