Problem solving conference for AS and A level maths students



This event is ideal for Year 12 and 13 students who are thinking of applying to study mathematics, engineering or related university courses, or for students who just enjoy solving mathematical problems.

The event will also be useful for maths teachers who would like to gain more experience and ideas of how to introduce problem solving within their own classrooms. Teachers will also be given information about university admissions tests and support for students preparing for these.


  • To provide students with an opportunity to begin to increase their depth of mathematical understanding and so gain confidence in attempting more challenging questions and problems.
  • To allow students to discuss and try out problem solving strategies, to think about different ways of looking at example problems and how to approach writing solutions.
  • To provide teachers with information about university admissions tests that require maths problem solving skills.
  • To provide teachers with the opportunity to learn about potential sources of questions and problems that develop their students' skills.

Who will benefit from attending?

AS and A level maths students who wish to develop their problem solving skills in order to apply for a maths-rich undergraduate degree will benefit from attending this conference.

Teachers who wish to learn about the problem solving requirements of university admissions tests and the support available for their students will benefit from attanding this conference.


Students will attend a variety of workshops that will cover writing and presenting solutions, working in a group and getting started with problem solving. They will also have the opportunity to solve maths problems from a variety of competitions and admissions tests.

Teachers will work with their students for some of the workshops as well as attending a session giving information about the requirements of the various university admissions tests that involve maths problems.


This event is free for students and teachers from state-funded schools, colleges and academies.

A fee of £100 will be required of independant schools.

NOTE: This event is intended for YEAR 12 STUDENTS, even though the text above refers to both Y12 and Y13 students. There is a separate event on Wed 16th Oct which is better suited to Y13 students.
