Online courses for the MAT and the TMUA

Overview

We are running two online courses to prepare students for the MAT (admissions tests for the University of Oxford and Imperial College) and the TMUA (admissions tests for Durham University, the University of Warwick and Lancaster University).

Students can gain a reduced offer at Durham University or Lancaster University with a good score in the TMUA. The University of Warwick will also accept a good score in the TMUA as part of its entry requirements. There are two papers with 20 multiple choice questions on each.

These courses – one for the MAT, and one for the TMUA – will each consist of seven one-hour online sessions. There is no obligation to attend both courses, though students are welcome to enrol on the MAT and the TMUA course.

Online courses for the MAT and the TMUA will run in September and October, with exact dates to be confirmed.

Session schedules:

MAT TMUA
Integers, Sequences and Series Integers, Sequences and Series
Polynomials and Logarithms Proof
Coordinate Geometry and Trigonometry Polynomials and Logarithms
Curve Sketching and Integration Logical thinking
Algorithms and Counting Functions and Curve Sketching
Review of misc. multiple choice test questions and exam technique Coordinate Geometry and Trigonometry
Review of misc. longer questions and exam technique Review of misc. multiple choice test questions and exam technique

Live online sessions will include discussion of key points and examples from past papers. Course participants will be given access to recordings of the sessions should they not be able to attend a live session. Participants will also be given access to additional online resources including extra notes, exercise sheets and solutions.

Aims

  • To introduce mathematical problems of the difficulty level of the MAT/ TMUA admissions tests.
  • To develop students' problem solving skills so they have confidence in applying for universities that require the MAT or TMUA admissions tests or take them into consideration.
  • To provide support for students preparing for the MAT or TMUA admissions tests.

Who will benefit from attending?

Students who are anticipating sitting either the MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test) or TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission).

Materials and Equipment

All that is needed to participate in the sessions is a computer with a broadband internet connection. No further equipment is needed - communication with the course tutor during the live sessions is via the instant chat feature of the virtual classroom in which the sessions take place.

Cost

The fee for the course is £60, though there are some funded places available to those eligible.

In addition, if you have applied this year for the Problem Solving Matters Course, but have been informed that you have been unsuccessful in gaining a place, we are offering a reduced fee for the MAT and TMUA course of £30.
