Year 10 Fun Maths Day
The AMSP and the University of Wolverhamptonare hosting a free Maths Enrichment Day aimed specifically at KS4 students.
On the day students will have the opportunity to get involved with three hands on workshops followed by a closing pleanary talk by our fantastic keynote speaker Katie Steckles, one of the Maths Inspiration presenters.
- To consider mathematics used in the real world
- To look at where mathematics is used in industry
- To show that mathematics can be fun
Who will benefit from attending?
This day is aimed specifically at KS4 students.
Workshop topics include Siegengineering, The Dragon Quiz and Dobble - The Maths Behind the Game.
Katie Steckles will talk about "The Hidden Maths of Technology". There are numbers all around us that make our modern lives possible. From rescuing your lost words in text messages, to taking selfies.
Topics covered will include barcodes and check digits, error correction, binary numbers & ASCII, mathematics behind digital images. This session will show students the mathematics behind modern technology and emphasise the importance of learning maths for future tech careers.
Katie Steckles is a mathematician based in Manchester, who gives talks and workshops and writes about mathematics. She finished her PhD in 2011, and since then has talked about maths in schools, at science festivals, on BBC radio and TV, at music festivals, as part of theatre shows and on the internet. She currently lectures part-time at Sheffield Hallam University.
This is the first of two Year 10 Fun Maths Days.
The second is on 5th July 2019 at Walsall Campus, Walsall and the plenary speaker is Ben Sparks from the Maths Inspiration Team.
There is a £100 travel bursary available to schools in Priority Areas
