West Kent Teacher Network

Developing reasoning in A level maths

The West Kent Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project allowing teachers of maths to meet, to collaborate and to share professional development. We meet 4 times per year and the programme is a mixture of informal sessions and speaker-led training events

  • To investigate the role of reasoning in the A-level curriculum

The challenge of developing mathematical reasoning has been identified by Ofsted as an area of weakness in teaching strategies and in schemes of learning. This is particularly relevant at key stage 5 with the overarching themes of mathematical problem solving and mathematical modelling required to be applied across the whole of the AS and A level subject content.

In this workshop we will investigate teaching approaches using existing resources to enrich teaching and deepen understanding; we will consider how to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the linear nature of the new A level to make meaningful connections between pure and applied content and will discuss how departments can offer coordinated support to teachers in meeting the demands of the overarching themes of the new A level.

This session is free thanks to funding from the AMSP. Light refreshments will be provided.
