NW Online PD Pick 'n' Mix Network

Bar Modelling at GCSE

Overview

The NW Online PD Pick 'n' Mix Network is a series of themed sessions to support Maths Teachers. It will be ideal for any teachers including those who have recently started teaching, or just someone who wants some new teaching ideas.

  • the Pick 'n' Mix design allows teachers to dip into as many or as few sessions as they like
  • there will be a strong emphasis throughout the sessions on pedagogy, problem-solving and technology

Content

In this session we will look at how bar models and other pictorial representations can be used effectively at GCSE, especially for borderline grade 4-5 learners.

We will look at examples which can help to cement their understanding of topics and concepts such as ratio problems, adding fractions, solving equations, and factorising quadratics.
