Dealing with Cognitive Load in Maths

Overview

The NW Online PD Pick 'n' Mix Network is a series of themed sessions to support Maths Teachers. It will be ideal for any teachers including those who have recently started teaching, or just someone who wants some new teaching ideas. 

  • the Pick 'n' Mix design allows teachers to dip into as many or as few sessions as they like
  • there will be a strong emphasis throughout the sessions on pedagogy, problem-solving and technology

Content

How does cognitive load thoery explain why some pupils sometimes struggle to learn maths?

And more importantly, what can we do about it?

In this session, you'll get to know a bit of the theory behind working memory and coginitve load, and you'll leave with a handful of strategies which you can implement in your classroom the very next day.
