Overview

A day to introduce and develop Higher Level Problem Solving Skills for year 12 students.

Students will think about the information that they see in a mathematical situation, the skills that could be required for that situation, to decide what skills will be required to solve certain problems.

The Professional Development for teachers will help teachers to effectively prepare their students for the problem solving requirements of their final examination and provide them with a plan for developing their most able students, enabling them to consider universities that require admissions tests.

Students and teachers will have separate sessions and then later get together for teachers to lead small groups of students through new problems.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided, but please note that lunch will not be provided.

Aims

• To help students to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills.
• To help teachers to develop their confidence and ability to support students in problem solving.
• To allow students time in small groups to discuss ideas and develop their thinking in collaboration with other students and mentors.

Who will benefit from attending?

This is a day for Year 12 A level Maths, Further Maths or Core Maths students who have an interest in developing their Higher Level Problem Solving skills, and enjoy working on and solving problems and for teachers of A-level Maths and/or Further Maths or Core Maths who wish to help to improve the problem solving Skills of their students.

The day will suit students who are interested in developing their problem solving skills but have not yet been to any problem solving courses. Those who have already attended an extended Higher Level Problem Solving course may find the day is a repeat of ideas they have already met.
