Overview

Location: The Screen Academy, N5 2AG

Applications close 14th June 12pm

This event is an opportunity to explore ways of teaching Maths to students who are dyslexic, dyscalculic, dyspraxic or suffer with Maths anxiety.

Workshop 1

We will explore how participants experience the phenomenon of maths anxiety in their own classrooms and how they may raise awareness of it. We will explore a range of strategies to help learners who have mathematics anxiety to heal past harm, to communicate and manage any emotions that affect their learning adversely and to respond effectively to opportunities to learn mathematics.

The workshop will be delivered by Sue Johnston-Wilder, Associate Professor in the Education Studies Department of the University of Warwick.

Workshop 2

The session will focus on a few key manipulatives and move to some visual representations that can help all our students to move towards an understanding of abstract ideas. Teachers will receive a pack of resources to use in their teaching.

The workshop will be delivered by Rose Jewell, author of GCSE Maths for Neurodivergent Learners.

Lunch will be provided.

You need to have been DBS checked to enter this building.

Aims

  • to understanding some of the issues neurodiverse learners face in the Maths classroom
  • to consider how visual representation can help process mathematical thinking
  • to explore how manipulatives can be used to build understanding
