Overview

In addition to our online courses in Maths for Biology, Geography and Psychology, we are delighted to offer a free one-day professional development conference which focuses on developing confidence in teaching the mathematical requirements of A level Biology, Geography and Psychology.

There will be optional workshops so that you can focus on the mathematical requirements that feature in your course. Strategies and ideas will be provided for teachers to use in their classrooms to deepen their students' understanding and there will be an opportunity to develop confidence in working with real data using technology.

This event is being run in partnership with the Association of Science Educators, The Royal Geographical Society and The Association for the Teaching of Psychology.

Aims

  • Develop confidence in teaching the mathematical requirements of A level Biology, Geography or Psychology.
  • Understand how studying Core Maths will support students with the mathematical requirements of their other subjects.
  • Network and share ideas with fellow teachers.

Who will benefit from attending?

These conferences are for teachers of Biology, Geography and Psychology. If you are a maths teacher, please explore our extensive Core Maths PD offer.

Materials and equipment

**Laptops/tablets are essential for this day**

Eligibility

Due to the way we are funded, priority will be given to teachers from state funded schools and colleges in England.

Cost

This conference is free of charge.

Study schedule

9:15-9:45 Registration
Register and select your optional workshops for sessions 2 and 3 (full details below).
There will be refreshments provided.
9:45-10:30 Session 1 with Cat van Saarloos
During this session Cat will lead you through short statistics activity that enables you to network with other delegates. We will also explore some very easy ways to use technology to analyse data.
This activity can be taken straight to your classroom and full resources will be provided.
10:30-10:40 Comfort/travel break
10:40-11:40

Session 2 Choose between two workshops:

Working with real data with Tom Rainbow (also available in Session 3)
Your students will be expected to work with data as part of the process of reaching informed conclusions. Many of these students will go on to study degrees or have careers that will utilise and further develop this learning. But when faced with a data set, where on earth do you start?

In this session we will work through the process of investigating a data set. This will include:
·        choosing contexts to hook students in
·        how to use effective analysis to tell stories with data
·        using free online technology to bring data to life

Whilst we will be using some relevant statistical methods within this session the primary focus will be on the data itself and how you can assist in moving your learners’ thinking from ‘opinionated’ to ‘informed’.

**No prior experience with spreadsheets is required**

Supporting students with lower prior attainment in maths with Sarah Denison

Do you find that some of your students struggle with basic maths skills? Does their difficulty in applying numerical skills in context make it hard to embed mathematics in your course?

In this session, we will explore:
·        ways to assess students’ prior learning
·        representations that can support students’ understanding (with a particular focus on percentages and ratio)
·        the variation you might put in place to fully assess students’ understanding of a concept

11:40-12:10 Networking and refreshments
There will be refreshments provided.

12:10-13:10

Session 3 Choose between two workshops:

Working with real data with Tom Rainbow (please see Session 2 for description)

Introduction to hypothesis testing with Cat van Saarloos
In our day to day lives we regularly make inferences about the world around us. In fact, we may even be doing informal hypothesis tests in our head. But it can be challenging to help students relate this informal process to the statistical tests they are required to perform and interpret.

In this session, we will:
·        discuss embedding informal inference in your lessons
·        unpick the formal process of hypothesis testing
·        showcase popular resources

13:10-14:00 Lunch
There will be a buffet lunch provided.

14:00-15:30

Session 4 with Sarah Denison
With a packed curriculum, it can be tricky to find the time to embed the mathematical requirements within your course. In this session you will explore free, engaging and interactive digital activities which will enhance student learning. There are separate collections for Biology, Geography and Psychology which are tailored to the mathematical requirements and contexts in your course.

In this session, you will learn how to:
· assign activities to your students
· collect student responses and use them to give quality feedback on misconceptions
·  personalise an activity with a card sort, multiple choice questions and add media content
