Overview

This course will give teachers who have some experience of mechanics an opportunity to extend their knowledge and explore ways of deepening understanding in the key Y13 topics of projectiles, moments and 2D kinematics.

This will be an active day where participants can try out and discuss a range of approaches to teaching mechanics, including modelling, practicals and problem solving.

Aims

  • Deepen subject knowledge in projectiles, moments and 2D kinematics
  • Explore engaging ways to teach mechanics, including problem solving and modelling
  • Discuss ideas and work with other teachers
  • Investigate the links between GCSE Mathematics, pure maths and mechanics

Who will benefit from attending?

New and experienced teachers of AS and A level Mathematics who have some experience of mechanics. Familiarity with Newton's laws of motion, force diagrams and simple kinematics will be assumed.

Content

The day will include the following sessions:

  • Projectiles – including ideas for modelling projectile motion
  • Moments – including practical ideas for use in the classroom
  • Kinematics in 2D – including problem solving and use of exam questions

Eligibility

All teachers are eligible to apply, though priority will be given to teachers from state-funded schools in England.
