Overview

This session will explore effect ways of using a scientific calculator to build understanding and solve problems efficiently. The session has a wealth of tips about using calculators well and plenty of ideas to use in the classroom.

Aims

  • To explore the functionality of a scientific calculator including the latest Classwiz calculators
  • To investigate teaching strategies made possible by calculator use
  • To investigate problem solving strategies using a calculator
  • To consider active learning activities that can be used alongside calculators to increase student motivation in the classroom

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers of Foundation or Higher tier GCSE who suspect they are not making the most of the calculators that their students have and are looking for ways of using calculators to help with algebra and graph drawing.

Content

The modes of the Casio scientific calculator: calculate, statistics, table, ratio, and Math Box on the new classwiz. Much of the content will transfer to other calculators.

Materials and equipment

You will need a scientific calculator or emulator to work along with the presentation.
