Overview

Theme: Using real data to make Core Maths more engaging

Level 3 Maths Work Groups are sustained professional development programmes, run in partnership by Maths Hubs and the AMSP. Each Work Group is an ongoing collaboration between teachers from local schools and colleges led by an expert in maths professional development.

Developing Core Maths Pedagogy Work Groups provide national support for the effective development of pedagogy in the teaching of Core Maths. The Work Group focusses on collaborative discussion, planning, trialling ideas between sessions and evaluation.

Aims

  • These Work Groups give participants opportunities, through collaboration and experimentation, to develop improved teaching approaches that support the open-ended problem-solving skills Core Maths students need to develop, and share these with departmental colleagues.
  • Participant departments will support the role of Core Maths in promoting contextualised problem-solving and links to teaching in other subject areas.
  • Students in participant schools and colleges will take and succeed at Core Maths in increasing numbers.

Who will benefit from attending?

This Work Group is for experienced and developing teachers of Core Maths who are in at least their second year of teaching Core Maths. These may be teachers in post-16 settings whose main subject is maths or whose main subject is not maths. Participants will be expected, where appropriate, to work with colleagues in their own department.
