Overview

Maths for A level Geography is a course for teachers wishing to build their confidence in teaching the quantitative requirements (page 28) of A level Geography. This course is part of the Geography and Core Maths Initiative, which is being run in conjunction with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) For further information and resources see www.rgs.org/geomaths.

These free, online sessions are for geography teachers who wish to build their confidence when using mathematics in the teaching of A Level Geography. The six sessions will look at a range of statistical and analytical content. During the sessions we will model approaches to teaching mathematical content and share ideas on how to engage students in meaningful discussions about data in geography.

In addition to the online sessions, we would love for you to join us on Friday the 22nd of November in Birmingham for an in person day. It is not a compulsory part of the course, but previous delegates have expressed how much they would value the opportunity to work face-to-face with their colleagues. This day is also suitable for teachers who are not attending the online courses.

Aims

  • Develop confidence in teaching the quantitative elements of Geography
  • Explore ways in which the use of technology can improve statistical and analytical comprehension
  • Build on existing pedagogical skills

Who will benefit from attending?

These sessions are aimed at teachers of Geography or trainee teachers of Geography who would like to increase their confidence in teaching the quantitative content of Geography.

In the first session, no prior knowledge or experience will be assumed. Subsequent sessions may build on some knowledge and skills covered in prior sessions, so teachers are encouraged to attend the entire series if possible.

If you are unable to attend the online sessions then you may like to consider our On Demand Core Maths Foundations course. This will enable you to study a range of mathematical topics at a time that suits you.

The aims and intended outcomes of both these courses are consistent with the principles set out in the Education Inspection Framework.

Course features:

  • Six interactive live online sessions each no more than two hours long
  • Access to our support materials, resources and online group forum
  • Certification of successful completion of the course should four or more of the live sessions be attended.

Materials and equipment

During online sessions, we give delegates opportunities to discuss ideas with each other in breakout rooms. Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so we strongly encourage the use of microphones and webcams

Other information

These events will be run in Zoom. Teachers who sign up will be emailed in the days prior to the sessions and again on the day of each session with a link to register for the meeting in order to receive a link to the Zoom room.

Eligibility

Due to the way we are funded, priority will be given to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges in England and trainee geography teachers. Teachers from other institutions are very welcome to apply and will be accepted if we have capacity.

Cost

This course is free of charge to teachers working in state-funded schools and colleges in England. For others the course fee is £195.

Participant feedback

'This course really helped build my confidence and having a step by step approach to tackle difficult topics such as standard deviation and having the resources there ready to use i.e has been invaluable.'
'Thank you, this has been one of the most valuable pieces of CPD I have done.'
'It's made me think about different ways of teaching statistics and also lots of great software suggestions which I know will be useful for my students.'
