Overview

Total course length: one year

Sessions: Eight online sessions, each of length 75 minutes, accessible independently of each other.

This series of online sessions is intended to support teachers with delivering and embedding the AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics course. The series comprises a session on how to introduce and manage the specification and seven sessions focussing on specific topics which are key to the course. The topic sessions will include a combination of subject knowledge and pedagogy and will require active participation.

Sessions must be applied for independently: there is no obligation to attend all sessions. Sessions will not be recorded but a PDF of the resources used will be available afterwards for all qualifying teachers who registered for the session.

Aims

  • To familiarise teachers with the implementation of and key topics on the AQA Level 2 Further Maths course
  • To consider how these topics might be explored, examined and extended beyond GCSE
  • To collaborate on a range of questions, from basic to challenging, to ensure teachers are comfortable to explore these topics with their students.

Who will benefit from attending?

  • Teachers in schools where there is an intention to implement this course soon or where it has recently started
  • Teachers who have offered the previous specification for this course and want to update themselves on the changes in the new specification
  • Teachers with an interest in enriching and extending the classroom experience for students of Higher GCSE Mathematics.

Content

This session will focus on the knowledge of the Binomial Expansion that is required for the AQA Level 2 Further Maths course and in particular the following aspects

  • Visualising combinations
  • Pascal's triangle and beyond
  • What do the questions look like?
  • How might this be stretched?

In addition, we will explore the free resources available on Integral through your AMSP registration to support the teaching and assessment of the course.

Materials and equipment

The sessions will be held on the Zoom platform. The link to register for a specific session will be sent to applicants a few days before the event.

You are advised to use a headset or headphones with a microphone to provide the best sound quality and to prevent audio issues for other users. A laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone may be sufficient if you’re in a quiet area but please take the time to check this before the session.

In order to fully participate in the meeting please be willing to use your camera and microphone, although if this is impossible the chat option will be available. Please note that sessions will not be recorded.

Eligibility

All teachers who are currently working in a school in England are eligible for this series. Priority will be given to teachers in state funded schools, colleges and academies.
