Overview

A day of stimulating mathematical talks and activities designed to help students see the usefulness and fun of maths beyond the curriculum. The event is aimed at Year 10 mathematicians who may go on to study core maths, A level maths or further maths at post-16, especially those that may need a little encouragement to do so.

Aims

  • To offer students a taste of maths beyond GCSE
  • To explore potential careers supported by maths qualifications
  • To provide information about maths courses available post-16
  • To have fun working on unusual maths problems and learning about new areas of maths

Who will benefit from attending?

Any Year 10 students who may study maths beyond GCSE, especially those who may be undecided or may be unaware of options other than A level maths.

09:30 - 10:00 Arrival and registration

10:30 - 11:15 Workshop Session 1

11:15 - 11:30 Break

11:30 - 12:15 Workshop Session 2

12:15 - 13:00 Lunch break - students to bring packed lunch

14:45 - 15:00 Feedback and departure

Other information

Students are asked to bring their own snacks, drinks and packed lunch for breaks. Teachers will be provided with refreshments and lunch.

Eligibility

This event is intended for state-funded schools in the first instance. Independent schools will be added to a waiting list and invited to attend if space allows.

Cost

Schools may bring up to 16 students and accompanying teacher(s) free of charge.
