Overview

A day of mathematical activities with the opportunity for students to meet enthusiasts of their own age and older. The emphasis of the day will be that mathematics can be both fun and challenging.

Aims

  • To provide students with presentations and activities that stimulate mathematical thinking.
  • To allow students to work collaboratively on a task.
  • To give an insight into 16-19 mathematics.

Who will benefit from attending?

We hope that you will be able to bring a group of up to 16 students from year 10 who would enjoy the challenge of this event.

Content

In the morning there will be an introductionary talk and then students will be split into two groups and everybody will engage in two interactive maths workshops. There will be competitions with students working in mixed school groups for one part. In the afternoon there will be a lecture for all students.

Materials and equipment

Students will need to have a pen, pencil, ruler and a Casio fx calculator. They may wish to have their own pair of scissors and sellotape / glue.

Other information

Students should bring their own refreshments and drinks, including a packed lunch. Buffet lunch will be provided for teachers.

Parking arrangements will need to be made in advance. Number plates of vehicles are required and will be requested prior to the event. There will be the facility to drop students off without parking.

Students should wear school uniform and teachers are requested to wear an ID lanyard.

Eligibility

The event is open to year 10 students at state funded schools accompanied by one or more teachers.

Places are limited to a maximum of 16 per school. Applicants will receive an email to indicate that sufficient places are available. The email address of a senior teacher is requested who will be able to that we have the option of confirming that cover has been arranged.
