Overview

KS3 and particularly KS4 maths teachers have a key role to play in not only securing the best outcomes for their students but also by inspiring an interest in further study of the subject beyond GCSE.  This one day course, organised jointly by the AMSP and the University of Leeds, aims to look at how KS4 teachers can inspire their students to continue with mathematical studies in the sixth form and beyond.

The day will be a series of workshops looking at how teachers can best influence and inspire students during their KS3/KS4 years.  Presenters will share a number of practical ideas and resources that can be used back in the classroom.

Aims

  • To share ideas and strategies to inspire your GCSE students and encourage them to continue with mathematics at Level 3.
  • To reflect on the important influence of teachers to encourage students from under-represented groups.
  • To model ways to support your students in developing their reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • To provide support in developing your professional practice and that of departmental colleagues.

Who will benefit from attending?

All teachers of KS4 mathematics, particularly those teaching in 11-16 schools.

Teachers who have only recently begun teaching A Level Mathematics or Core Maths would also benefit from attending.

Content

Sessions during the day include:

  • Maths in context: how topics covered in L3 Core Maths can enrich your KS4 classroom
  • Bringing Further Maths closer: GCSE roots for A Level fruits!
  • Enrichment: designing a journey of 11-19 mathematical 'stretch and challenge'
  • Exploring the global heritage of maths: diversity and inclusion in mathematics
  • STEM: developing shared approaches to maths in science and science in maths
