On Wednesday 2 December 2020, an AMSP Codebreaking and Cryptography enrichment event took place via a Zoom webinar. Led by Dr Katie Chicot of the Open University and facilitated by Andrew Birch, students were challenged to test their problem-solving skills in order to crack a series of codes! The event was extremely popular, with around 80 students attending from 14 schools. It was wonderful to see so many keen and enthusiastic codebreakers attending a maths enrichment event from 7:00-8:30pm!

The students competed in an online leaderboard and left the teachers in their wake, with no teachers even managing to make it into the top ten! We received the following feedback from students on our Codebreaking and Cryptography event:

  • Thank you for such a wonderful, interesting event!
  • Thank you – I hope that you are able to organise something like this again soon!
  • You have uplifted the evenings of almost 100 students!

All students were a credit to their schools, and many asked about further enrichment opportunities from the AMSP. In the spring term, there will be a series of nationally run online enrichment events, including the Maths Feast, so keep an eye on the AMSP events page for further details. Also, there may well be another locally organised evening enrichment event, so be sure to keep an eye out for an email regarding this.
