Valerija Peles, AC for Whitby and Scarborough

Maths is knocking on Scarborough’s doors! During March, there will be a series of enrichment events for primary and secondary children happening in Whitby and Scarborough.

The North Yorkshire Coast has been recognised as an Opportunity Area by the Department for Education. We want to encourage as many students to continue their mathematical education beyond GCSE and create better opportunities for themselves, developing their careers with strong maths skills and having well paid jobs in the future.

The AMSP and the Opportunity Area team have joined forces to inspire young mathematicians across the region. We’ll be working all year round, but right now a huge number of student inspiration events have been organised by the OA Team in schools and theatres, and we’re delighted to be part of this. Maths Feast competitions for Year 10 problem-solvers are happening around the country in February and March, and on 15 March, Scarborough TEC will host their very own feast of maths problems. The cherry on the cake is our enrichment day for Year 9 and 10 students, happening at the Royal Scarborough Hotel on 21 March – the spring equinox.

There’s also a Scarborough and area Maths Teacher Network Meeting in March, organised by the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub; more details via their website.
