On 27th and 28th March 2019, students and their teachers attended Maths and Beyond 2019, a day of enrichment for Years 10 and 11. This event is held every year at the University of Warwick’s Mathematics Institute. The day comprised of a variety of workshops and finished off with a plenary session where this year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Emily Grossman, inspired the students by sharing her personal experiences as a female scientist, consultant, broadcaster, communicator and trainer. Emily also spoke about how she has encountered stories in the media which have been misrepresented and shared her insights on what to consider when investigating whether a news story can be relied upon.

Here’s what the students and teachers had to say:

  • “It was fantastic to see our students engage with some education outside of their usual routines. I thought the level of maths was just perfect to engage everyone in some way and it was great to see such variety in the workshops. We’re all looking forward to next year already!” – Teacher, Hospital Education Service
  • “Maths and Beyond 2019 was very informative and helpful. I particularly enjoyed the interactive activities during the logic games session, and learning about things we don’t learn in school. Magical Maths gave me a different perspective of maths, and has intrigued me to learn more. The SynBio session opened my mind to different and unexpected, careers in maths, science and STEM. Overall, the day really heightened my interest for learning maths at A-level and beyond.” – Student, WMG Academy

Maths and Beyond 2020 will be running on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th March. Look out for booking information closer to the time.
