The 2019-20 Keele Problem Solving Course for Year 12 and Year 13 students has begun and every Thursday evening at 4.40pm (for 12 weeks, either side of Christmas) around 40 Year 12 and Year 13 students arrive at the School of Computing and Mathematics, at Keele University Campus, to work on challenging mathematical problems for two hours.

The students are split into two groups, led by experienced AMSP Associates, Ian Slater and Martin Paisley. Each group has a real buzz, and it is great to see the students gain such a sense of satisfaction as they work together to improve their problem-solving skills.

Many of the Year 13 students are now preparing for interviews and applications to Oxford, Cambridge and other top Russell Group universities. Many of them attended the course as Year 12s last year.

The students come from far afield to take part. They attend schools and colleges in Telford, Uttoxeter and Northwich, as well as Stoke and Newcastle-under-Lyme, and their dedication is truly admirable. I am sure it is not just the crisps, drinks and biscuits that attract them.
