Teachers local to the University of Warwick gathered together in the Mathematics Institute on Wednesday 15 January 2020 for a twilight session looking at university admissions tests, including STEP, MAT and TMUA.

No longer just for students applying to elite universities, admissions tests are being used by an increasing number of institutions to identify students suitable for their STEM degree programmes. These examinations can form part of the university offer and, in some cases, they can be used to lower A level offers.

Richard Lissaman delivered an excellent and engaging session, with much of the time given over to getting hands-on with problems from the exams. This session also coincided with the start of classes held at the university for Year 12 and 13 students, designed to support them with preparing for the exams, or simply for those looking to boost their A level grade(s).

Feedback that we received from teachers includes:

  • Good to discuss approaches to teaching/mentoring through this material.
  • It was nice to see a range of problems.
  • Thank you for the very helpful (and enjoyable) course.

This twilight professional development event and the classes for Year 12 and 13 students run each year at the university in the Spring term. If you are interested, please get in touch with your local Area Coordinator.
