“I can’t do it, Miss!”

“Can’t do what, Jamie?”

“Maths!!”

Have you noticed how some pupils can “give up” on maths before they’ve even started? How it’s almost okay to say the sweeping statement “I’m no good at maths”, sometimes with a strange sense of pride?! What can you, as a classroom teacher or TA, do to tackle this?

Following requests from local teachers, I’ve designed an afternoon CPD session to look at different pedagogical approaches to address this.

We’ll also look at what language and behaviours can improve pupils’ independence and resilience when tackling mathematical problems.
